Robby’s best friend, Eggy, suggests that they go to the landlord’s manor to weed vegetables for him. Of course, Eggy is just hungry, as usual, since he has no mother. The two boys do a good job of finding vegetables for Lord Alfred, though Eggy has “rescued” many of them and placed them in his tunic. When Robby goes to tell the steward that they are through with the job, a pretty young girl Robby’s age answers the door. Robby is mesmerized with Abigail and is reluctant to leave. On the way home, he mentions to Eggy that he wants to learn to read, but Eggy admonishes him and tells him it will do him no good unless he marries above his station as a commoner, possibly with a girl like Abigail.
